What gives Banarasi georgette its famous fall

Georgette earns its reputation on the way it moves. The fabric is a crepe, made from yarns that are tightly twisted before weaving, and that twist is what creates the faint crinkle and the soft, swinging fall that customers notice the moment they drape it. On a Banarasi georgette, that light base is brocaded with zari and resham motifs, so you get the comfort of a featherweight saree with the richness of Banarasi work. How Banarasi Georgette Sarees is made

The character comes from the yarn, not just the weave. Georgette uses highly twisted silk filaments, alternating S-twist and Z-twist threads, which pull against each other once woven and give the cloth its springy, pebbled surface. The most prized version in Varanasi is khaddi georgette, woven by hand on a handloom rather than a powerloom; the slower handloom packs the weft more firmly, so a khaddi georgette has more grip and a heavier, more graceful fall than a machine-made one. Over that sheer ground the weavers brocade the zari pattern as an extra weft, the same pit-loom and naksha process used for heavier Banarasi silks. The result holds the Banarasi motif but stays light in the hand.

How to style Banarasi Georgette Sarees

Point customers towards a well-fitted blouse, since georgette is softest and looks best with a little structure against it: high-neck, boat-neck, sleeveless or a touch of embroidery all work. Light jewellery by day, statement pieces for a party. The fabric pleats neatly, so the Nivi drape sits clean; a Bengali drape shows the pallu nicely for festive occasions. Dry-clean is safest for a zari georgette. If a customer prefers to hand-wash a plain one, it should be cold water, a mild detergent and absolutely no wringing, since twisting the wet fabric distorts the weave. Roll it in a towel to take out the water and dry it flat in the shade. Store it folded loosely or rolled rather than crammed, away from sunlight, and steam out travel wrinkles before dispatch rather than pressing a hot iron straight onto the zari. Keep perfume and deodorant off the zari, which tarnishes on contact.
