About the weave

Why organza feels structured yet weighs almost nothing

Organza is the one customers reach for when they want presence without weight. In Varanasi it is often called kora, after the crisp, raw state of the silk that gives the fabric its see-through body and that papery hold which lets a pleat stand on its own. It is woven sheer, then brocaded with zari and resham so the motifs seem to float on glass. People who find heavy silks too much for a long evening tend to fall for organza instead. For a boutique it is a strong festive and occasion line, and it photographs beautifully, which matters when your customers are sharing their look online.

The craft

How Banarasi Organza Sarees is made

Organza's transparency starts with the yarn. The silk is kept crisp and lightly gummed rather than fully softened, so when it is woven in a simple, open plain weave the cloth stays sheer and holds its shape. On that delicate ground the weavers brocade the design: fine silver-gilt zari, sometimes resham colour through meenakari accents, floated as an extra weft and bound into the weave on the same jacquard pit looms used across Banaras. Because the base is so light, the work has to be controlled by hand to keep the cloth from puckering, which is why a well-made organza sits flat and an over-worked one ripples. Expect slight, natural creasing in organza; it is the nature of the cloth, not a fault.

How to style Banarasi Organza Sarees

A brocade, silk or lightly embellished blouse complements organza without weighing it down. Keep jewellery refined; the sheen carries the look. Steam, never iron flat, and tell customers a quick steam at home brings it back before an event. It suits festive, reception and cocktail dressing, and the structured pleats hold well for photographs.

Care & handling

Storing, handling & care

Organza is dry-clean only. Store it rolled or loosely folded in muslin, not pressed hard under other sarees, because sharp creases are stubborn in this cloth. A handheld steamer is your friend; hold it a little away and let the steam relax the wrinkles rather than crushing them with an iron. Keep it out of direct sun and away from snagging surfaces, since the sheer weave catches on rough jewellery and rough nails. Handle it gently before dispatch so the crisp finish reaches the customer intact.
