How Banarasi Chiniya Silk Sarees is made

Chiniya, sometimes spelt chinia, is a lighter, finer variety of silk; the name nods to a Chinese-origin silk tradition that became part of the Banarasi weaver's palette. Because the yarn is fine and smooth, it dyes to clean, saturated shades and weaves into a lighter cloth than katan. The base is set on the usual Varanasi jacquard pit looms and brocaded with zari and coloured resham, often with meenakari touches where small areas of colour are woven into the zari motifs. The lighter ground is what lets chiniya carry plenty of pattern while still feeling soft and easy in the hand.
