About the weave

The translucent silk with a glow of its own

Chanderi has a glow that customers notice straight away: a soft, glassy transparency and a body so light it almost disappears in the hand. It comes from the town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, traditionally woven in a fine silk-and-cotton mix, and we offer it both in its classic form and with Banarasi-style zari work. It drapes with a graceful, airy fall and suits the customer who wants something refined and understated that still feels special. For a boutique it is an elegant lightweight line that bridges everyday and festive wear, and it sells especially well in soft, luminous colours.

The craft

How Banarasi Chanderi Silk Sarees is made

Chanderi's signature sheerness comes from the yarn. Traditional Chanderi uses very fine, lightly processed silk-and-cotton threads that are not fully degummed, which keeps a natural glaze on the fibre and gives the woven cloth its glossy transparency. It is woven on handlooms in Chanderi, often with delicate butis and zari borders, and a Banarasi-style chanderi adds the richer brocade Varanasi is known for. The fineness of the yarn is exactly what makes the saree so light and so sheer, and also why genuine chanderi has a soft shine rather than a harsh, synthetic gleam.

Styling guidance to pass on

How to style Banarasi Chanderi Silk Sarees

Simple or lightly embroidered blouses suit chanderi's delicate look, and minimal jewellery keeps it graceful. It works for both festive and daytime wear. Tell customers a smooth, unfussy drape shows the translucency best, and that a contrast petticoat shade can subtly change how the sheer fabric reads.

Care & handling

Storing, handling & care

Dry-clean to protect the fine weave and zari. Store chanderi in a cotton cloth in a cool, dry place, away from sun, and keep it from snagging, as the sheer cloth catches easily. Steam gently before dispatch rather than pressing hard. Because the yarn is fine, avoid heavy starching or rough handling, which can stress the delicate threads.
