About the weave

Why tussar looks and feels unlike any other silk

Tussar appeals to the customer who is a little tired of smooth, shiny silk and wants something with grain and character. It is a wild silk with a naturally warm, gold-toned colour and a slightly textured, irregular surface that catches light differently from mulberry silk. Many of our tussar sarees carry cutwork, where fine threads are floated and then trimmed to leave airy, lacy motifs across the body. For a boutique it is a quiet differentiator: it stands apart on the rail, suits customers who love earthy, handcrafted things, and gives you something to show beyond the usual silks.

The craft

How Banarasi Tussar Silk Sarees is made

Tussar starts with a different silkworm. Unlike cultivated mulberry silk, tussar comes from wild moths reared on forest trees, and the fibre they produce is coarser, more uneven and naturally golden, which is the source of that texture and warm tone. The yarn is reeled and woven into a base with more body than fine silk. The cutwork effect, often called fekua, is made by floating an extra weft thread across the surface to form the motif and then snipping the loose floats away by hand, leaving a clean design on the front with tiny cut ends on the reverse. It is patient work, and the slight irregularity is part of the appeal, not a flaw.

How to style Banarasi Tussar Silk Sarees

Classic short or three-quarter sleeve blouses keep the focus on the texture; an off-shoulder reads more modern. Minimal, sculptural jewellery suits tussar's earthy character better than heavy gold. A low bun or soft curls and a pair of mojaris finish the look. Position it to customers buying for daytime weddings, art-and-craft crowds, and anyone who values a handmade feel.

Care & handling

Storing, handling & care

Always dry-clean tussar; it does not enjoy repeated washing and can stiffen or lose its sheen. Store it in a cotton cloth in a cool, dry place, away from direct sun, and keep it from rubbing against rough surfaces that could catch the cutwork floats. Tussar is strong and lasts for years when it is dry-cleaned and stored properly, so it is genuinely an heirloom-grade buy you can recommend with confidence.
