About the weave

What makes chiffon the easiest saree to wear

Chiffon is the saree customers describe as feeling like nothing at all. It is even lighter and sheerer than georgette, with a soft, liquid drape that skims rather than sits, and that is exactly why it flatters so many body types. On a Banarasi chiffon, fine zari motifs are brocaded onto that airy ground, so it keeps the heritage look while staying weightless. It is an easy, broad-appeal category for a boutique: people pick it up for parties, for evenings, for travel, and for anyone nervous about carrying off a heavier silk.

The craft

How Banarasi Chiffon Sarees is made

Chiffon, like georgette, is a crepe built from very highly twisted yarns, but spun finer and woven more openly, which is what makes it sheerer and softer to the touch. Those alternating-twist threads give it the faint grain and the fluid fall. For a Banarasi chiffon, the delicate base is set on the loom and the zari pattern is brocaded in as an extra weft, the same Varanasi technique used on silks, just worked with a lighter hand so the sheer cloth does not pull or pucker. The lightness is the whole point, so the brocade is usually kept to borders, butis and a worked pallu.

Styling guidance to pass on

How to style Banarasi Chiffon Sarees

Recommend a fitted or lightly embellished blouse so the soft fabric has some shape against it, and light, elegant jewellery that suits its airy character. The Nivi drape sits cleanly; a pant-style or modern drape works for party looks. Tell customers it folds away small and travels well, which makes it a natural pick for destination functions.

Care & handling

Storing, handling & care

Chiffon is delicate, so dry-clean it, or hand-wash a plain one very gently in cold water with no wringing at all. Press the water out between a towel and dry it flat in the shade. Store it rolled to avoid hard creases, and steam rather than iron; if you must iron, use the lowest heat with a cloth in between. It snags easily, so keep it away from rough jewellery and store it apart from sequinned or zari-heavy pieces that can catch it.
